Despite fluoridation of public water systems and the introduction of fluoride-containing toothpastes, the prevalence of caries experience (untreated lesions plus lesions having had surgical intervention) remains at 97% in the overall United States population. In the United States, as much as $48 billion is spent for the treatment and correction of the "results" of dental caries (otherwise known as "tooth decay").
A survey of 1,000 U.S. households indicated that 67% would purchase a simple, rapid and disposable test available at your local pharmacy or grocery store which tells you how likely you are to have a cavity before it can be visually seen by a dentist, and before the cavity requires corrective intervention such as filling or removal of one or more teeth.
A joint survey with the American Academy of Pediatrics indicated 86% of clinical respondents would utilize this test over current standard of care; and 56% of respondents indicated their desire to participate in future clinical trials. A second generation test and 100 patient clinical trial is being funded primarily from the National Institutes of Health.
